Nike Smart Systems (NSS) envisions, develops, and commercializes digitally connected and enabled products that serve Athletes* better through integrated, personal, and responsive products and experiences.

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR

We are looking for a Firmware Engineer II for the Nike SS team. Our team is looking for an individual who will be responsible for embedded firmware design of innovative consumer electronics products that help make athletes better. This role will assist in the development of a robust firmware platform by designing efficient, testable, and scalable code that can implement across different hardware platforms to enable outstanding athlete product experiences. The successful candidate will have shown experience driving system architecture, from initial prototypes to production code, including driving the ability to manufacture at scale. Join us and help define the future of sport.

WHAT YOU WILL WORK ON

In this role, you will be working with the internal NSS firmware, software, QA, and algorithm teams; as well as partner organizations. You will work on a common firmware platform that supports multiple products, crafting portable and scalable firmware components. You will gain a deep understanding of different sensing technologies, bringing them to life in integrated footwear and apparel for both research and consumer experiences. This role will assist with developing and maintaining testable firmware, helping to craft testable systems to ensure product quality.

WHO YOU WILL WORK WITH

This individual will report directly to the Director of Firmware and Software Engineering for Nike SS. You will work closely with other internal and external firmware, software, and algorithm resources. You will have the opportunity to work in a small team environment, partnering closely and being mentored by experienced team members. As part of a small team, you will have the opportunity to work on a variety of technologies, and get both depth and breadth of exposure to new technologies. The NSS Team sits within Nike Innovation, and partners with other research-focused groups, to bring exciting new capabilities to market.

WHAT YOU BRING

  • Master's or bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering or related technical field; or a equivalent combination of relevant education, training, and experience.
  • Experience developing firmware for different microprocessors and with different tool chains including small footprint embedded systems preferred.
  • Experience identifying hardware requirements based upon system firmware requirements a plus.
  • Has worked with Engineers, Designers, Innovators, and other SMEs to architect and realize intent and experience design of embedded systems and solutions. Uses concept sketches, pseudo-code, engineering design/ideas, and other communication methods to assure clear understanding of technological capabilities and limitations.
  • Understanding of embedded firmware architecture and system design.
  • Strong understanding of software design processes, methodologies and approaches.
  • Experience in data compression technologies targeted to a resource-constrained embedded environment.
  • Ability to support all phases of the product development cycle including architecture, design, development, debugging, documentation and validation.
  • Experience developing firmware for systems using low power 32-bit microcontrollers.
  • Experience writing or designing firmware for BLE, UART, SPI, I2C, USB and other communication protocols.
  • Experience writing or designing embedded low power management firmware.
  • Expertise in design of multitasking, event driven real time firmware using C and understanding RTOS concepts.
  • Experience in low-power hardware design.
  • Ability to read schematics and work through hardware level system issues.
  • Excellent creativity, communication, presentation, troubleshooting, time-management and analytical skills are required.
  • Ability to travel up to 20% of the time.
  • Available for frequent late-afternoon/evening conference calls.
